Rexroad APG - Awards
Recognition is a very good thing. The Federal Planning Division of the American Planning Association
has honored Rexroad APG three times for outstanding planning. The following excerpts are from jury comments regarding each award.
One of the key achievements of the Triangle Area Development Plan at Peterson Air Force Base is the way it handles various urban
issues and responds to site-specific features. Also, this project is unique in the way it explored different development scenarios
outlining potential uses for the site. An in-depth site analysis and traffic study provides direction for the redevelopment of this site.
A strong design concept, which includes symmetry, visual focal points, and axial avenues offset by radial roadways, is the strength of the project.
Design details are provided at both macro and micro level. This project creates a functional mix of design and planning techniques by including the
symbolic architectural character of the buildings and salient site characteristics.
The Fort Hamilton Real Property Master Plan achieves an honorable mention for its efforts to incorporate the planning scale and framework from the
surrounding Brooklyn community into base design. The plan creates a more mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly environment stretching from the surrounding
community through the front gate of the installation. Components of the plan, including the Capitol Investment Strategy, support the plan’s objective.
The Sustainable Sites ToolKit was designed to communicate the principles and benefits of sustainable design to professionals working on Air Force
installations throughout the world. The toolkit’s extensive list and explanations of sustainable practices is a web tool which is easily accessed by
designers and planners seeking to apply best practices to Air Force installations. The toolkit should be able to convey the Air Force’s commitment to
sustainability and help newly constructed facilities meet LEED requirements and applicable federal building and planning laws.
