HQ AFRC Campus Area Development Plan Nominated for Air Force Design Award
Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command is presently located in several facilities on Robins AFB. This plan represents a concept design for the construction of a new campus of facilities that will effectively consolidate all of the functions of this major command together. The design will serve to enhance the functional efficiency of the organization through proximity, advance force protection by bringing all functions onto the installation and greatly improve the image of this highly important organization of the Department of Defense.
This Area Development Plan is remarkable due to the fact that known constraints were turned into opportunities through design. The premier location of this site next to the golf course and Duck Lake was not preferred initially due to an undesirable view of an exposed sewer pipe. In addition, several areas near the project boundary had been designated as known or suspected cultural resource sites. The sewer pipe was camouflaged with the design of a pedestrian bridge over the top that will also provide connectivity to commercial services at the adjacent golf course. The cultural resource sites were turned into way-points along a proposed pedestrian circulation system bordering the lake.
